Percentage of Female Senators and Equal Pay Supporters Who are Republican



Description: These charts show the percentage of the female members of the U.S. Senate (113th) that identify with each party and the percentage of the Senators who voted in favor of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (11th: S14) that identify with each party.

Discussion: Almost one in four women in the U.S. Senate is a Republican. Only 9% of Republicans in the House are female compared to 30% of Democrats. Support for the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act is used as a measure of support for equal pay, although many Republicans would argue that that is not a good measure. Many Republicans contend that they do support equal pay, but argue that women are already paid equally or that there is nothing the government can do to fix the problem. However, in practice, voting against measures to promote equal pay is opposing equal pay regardless of the explanation the person doing do provides. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act contained relatively modest, but important, fixes to the earlier legislation against wage discrimination based on gender. Women today continue to be paid significantly less than men even when you control for education, experience, job title, responsibilities, hours worked, and so forth.
